Our dedicated Occupational Therapist is committed to helping individuals improve their overall health and well-being. Occupational Therapists collaborate with people to improve, maintain, or restore their ability to engage in everyday tasks and meaningful activities, commonly referred to as “occupations”. Using a holistic approach, we consider the personal, physical, social, institutional, and cultural factors that influence an individual’s participation. At the core of our approach is a focus on recognizing and utilizing each individual’s strengths, skills, and interests, and understanding their motivations and goals. We actively listen, learn, support, guide, and coach individuals through their unique journey of self-discovery, overcoming challenges, and leading joyful and fulfilling lives. Core areas of focus include:

SENSORY PROCESSING - Sensory processing is simply how we make sense of the world. It’s how our brains and our bodies receive, process, and interpret information from our senses and give meaning to our experiences. Occupational Therapists assist individuals in exploring, identifying, and understanding their unique sensory preferences, sensitivities, and challenges. They then collaboratively build individualized plans and strategies designed to help individuals engage meaningfully with their environments.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING SKILLS: Executive functioning refers to cognitive skills that help individuals in managing tasks, time, and information effectively. These skills involve processes such as planning, organization, working memory, and problem solving. Occupational Therapists assess and support individuals by helping them develop strategies and techniques to understand their strengths and challenges in these areas. They aim to enable individuals to utilize and improve their executive functioning skills, enhancing participation and satisfaction in everyday life.

EMOTIONAL REGULATION – Emotional regulation involves the capacity to understand, manage, and express emotions in a healthy and productive manner across various situations. Occupational therapists assess how an individual's emotional well-being influences their ability to engage in meaningful activities, self-care, work, and social interactions. They work with individuals to develop strategies and techniques to enhance emotional regulation skills and effectively cope with life's challenges.

STRESS MANAGEMENT - Stress management is the process of identifying, understanding, and effectively coping with stressors to ensure well-being and functional participation. Occupational Therapists assess stress triggers and collaborate with individuals to develop a variety of strategies. These may include building coping techniques, exploring environmental modifications, engaging in activities, practicing cognitive reframing, and developing social supports. The goal is to equip individuals with a range of tools to manage stress effectively in their daily lives.

SKILLS FOR DAILY LIVING - There are many day-to-day skills that individuals are often expected to have, but are rarely taught. These skills encompass activities like meal preparation, grooming, dressing, budgeting, using public transit, filling out forms, using a phone, and shopping, which can be challenging for many individuals. Occupational Therapists specialize in breaking down these daily tasks. They teach individuals skills and strategies to enable them to successfully perform these necessary activities, aiming to foster a sense of accomplishment and well-being in their lives.

It can be so challenging to overcome hardships such as childhood trauma that keeps you stuck in painful memories. You feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and keep facing conflicts in your relationships because of intercultural or intergenerational differences. Your fears make small life decisions feel overwhelming. Your sadness and loneliness can drain all of your energy and hopes in having a fulfilling life, leaving you feeling like a shadow of your ideal self. These difficulties disrupts every aspect of your life, making it difficult to concentrate on goals, connect with others, or simply enjoy being present in the moment.

You have felt unheard, unseen, or unimportant, try to manage a constant stream of self-doubt, guilt, and worthlessness. But deep down, you know there’s more waiting for you.

These thoughts and burdens restricts you from showing up in your relationships, careers, and even keeps you from discovering your true potential.

Vannie uses evidence-based treatments, including Emotionally Focused Therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), to help clients live more fully and authentically. Her passion for supporting clients in expressing overwhelming emotions grew from her experiences as a social justice lawyer. While working with clients to address the injustices they faced, she realized that something essential was missing—a deeper understanding of how life events impacted their emotional well-being, as well as the need for a compassionate companion to support them through life’s challenges.

When emotions like worry, fear, loneliness, sadness, or anger burden relationships and life goals, Vannie believes that expressing these feelings in a warm, safe environment is essential. Through this process, she guides clients to find peace, meaning, and a renewed connection with themselves.
